LOVE FOR HI-808

By now the Blue Scholars established that they got love for the 808. The 808 has been showing love back by pushing their EP called Oof! to the top of iTunes hip-hop downloads and packing each of their live shows in Hawai‘i. The video for the lead track off the album, “HI-808” was filmed in Hawai‘i, displaying local backdrops and living. Before their recent success, Geo, one-half of the duo, used to call Hawai‘i home. His father was in the Navy and was stationed in Hawai‘i from 1982 to 1991. The young and observant Geo embraced Hawai‘i’s culture long enough for it to leave a lasting impression.

Geo eventually moved to Seattle, where he discovered his love for hip-hop. He sites the influences of Seattle’s DV One (who is one of Seattle’s most famous DJs) and producers Vitamin D and Jake One, who just dropped an album with ex-Rocafella rapper, Freeway. He also respects and speaks highly of Seattle emcee Wordsayer from the group Source of Labor for being the glue of Seattle hip-hop from the early nineties till now.

As Geo started making moves as an emcee, he linked up with Sabzi, a budding producer at the University of Seattle. Both were unknowns and building in their bedrooms; they decided to work on a few songs and leak them out to friends, family, and homies from around the way. Soon after working in the lab the duo had their first show in 2002, opening for Chicago’s super group the Typical Cats. From being the opening act at a show of 20 people in Seattle, to being the opening act for Kanye West and rocking a crowd of 27,000, Geo has definitely been making moves from his humble beginning in the Islands.

Recently, the pair signed a distribution and marketing deal with Duck Down Records. Duck Down is based out of Brooklyn, New York, and owned by Big Dru Ha and Buckshot. Duck Down established themselves as major players in hip-hop housing four of the grittiest and creative groups of the late nineties– OGC, Heltah Skeltah, Smif-N-Wessun, and Black Moon. With island roots, Northwest branches, and now East Coast leaves, Geo plans to plant the world with that 808 love.
