The Lightsleepers, Hawai‘i’s Hip-Hop culturalists have been doing Beatroot since 2004. Unlike any other battle of its kind this one pits producer vs. producer and allows the rebels who create the rhythms to take center stage.

On a trip to Hip-Hop Mecca back in 2004, I attended a beat battle at the Legendary Nuyorican Café. Astounded by the energy between the producers and audience I knew this is what Hawai‘i needed to break the monotony of the typical MC, DJ, B-boy battles.

Currently Beatroot has planted roots at Easy Music Center on King St. in Honolulu. There are six preliminary battles that qualify the producer for the Grand Championships in January 2009. The final location is soon to be announced. The preliminaries are free to attend and start promptly at 5pm and ends at 7pm.
