Interview with Ben Bridwell from Band Of Horses

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Contrast:  Hello Ben where are you calling from?

Ben:  I am calling from folly beach south Carolina.

What are your Surrounding’s?

I am on my back porch with a bunch of trees, no ocean, it kind of feels like a tree house, really hot.

Is that where you grew up?

I grew up 1.5 hours way from here in a town called Irmo South Carolina, kind of a suburban redneck place outside of Columbia. (Capital)

What is the Music scene like in South Carolina?

Laughs! Good question. I don’t know. I wish I knew. Honestly there are some good bands, but growing up here there weren’t many great rock bands. Like our biggest band would be hootie and the blowfish. Hootie is like a great pop band. We never had any great indie bands. In North Carolina they had bands we liked like Archers of loaf, Superchunk, the Popes. We were always like the redheaded stepchild of the Carolinas. Mostly what you have is white guy blues. Like songs that last for like 10 minutes and some white guy pretending he has the blues.

Right.  So what influenced you musically?

My parents were into classic rock, rolling stones. Also soul music, like Otis Redding, James Brown. Modern soul like Manhattan transfer. I don’t know they got kind of weird in the 80’s. Laughs! I don’t know lots of music did. I guess mostly soul and rock & roll music.

So you guys just started touring again.  Any funny recent stories?

Well i hate to call anybody out. Laughs!  Okay we all had margaritas in Austin, Texas before our show.  When we got to sound check we kept on the drinking train.   Sound check was over and Ryan did not want to get off the stage!  He just continued on playing some random songs.  We had to pull the plug because people were starting to come into the room.  He kept on performing it was pretty great.

So is there any particular city you guys are excited to see?

Honolulu of course!  haha. Right before Honolulu we are coming from Helsinki, Finland.  We have not been to either of those places.  I am definitely excited!

You ain’t the only one buddy. We got free tickets for the 23rd courtesy of Band of Horses and Bampproject.
