We have a new blog contributor named Andre. He is a music lover, twitter savant and all around rad dude. He is so fucking rad he made Contrast an exclusive mix just for your ear holes. Lance: You are a mysterious man and go by many aliases, care to explain?

Andre: Well I started out as Dj Jim Jones. Because I thought it sounded cool. It was a lot of fun for a while dj’ing with my friend’s Davey Shindig and Matt Ratt, throwing some of the most fun parties Nextdoor and The Loft has ever had as S.I.B. When that imploded, I focused on little things here and there. I decided to kind of quit the DJ lifestyle and focus on making music instead. That’s when I retired Jim Jones and re-branded under the Haircuts for Men moniker. Since I don’t “DJ” anymore, I have a little more time to focus on making music and millions of mixes. All of which are under my LFA Records label.

What is your process of making a mix?

I would have to say since having access to a huge archive of music, making a mix is just a matter of selection. Mostly choosing music which I love and has a solid fun vibe. I listen to tons of styles, which helps keep the mixes from getting stale and monotonous.

Who/what are your archenemies?

My only arch nemesis is time. It’s surprising I get anything done outside of my job (and playing tons of videogames). Actually if I had one archenemy it would have to be Tumblr.

Red Bull Thre3Style is an innovative concept that gives highly skilled DJs a global platform to showcase their skills, battle and gain notoriety by rockin’ the dance floor. Unlike other DJ battles that are based on solely technical aspects, Red Bull Thre3style has a creative and original format that seeks to find the DJ that has best perfected the true art of “party rockin’.” Eight of Honolulu’s top DJs will vie for the audience and judges’ favor, each with a 15-minute set that MUST contain at least three different musical genres. A panel of music industry judges will select the winners based on track selection, creativity, mixing skills, stage presence and crowd reaction; and ultimately decide who is the best on the decks in Honolulu.

Eight battle-ready DJs from the Honolulu metro area looking to prove their supremacy as the top party DJ. Competing DJs include: DJ Technique, DJ SSSolution, DJ Mike D, DJ Shift, DJ Jami, DJ Bozu, DJ Sho and DJ Compose.

The event will be hosted by FLASH (Purveyor of Honolulu Nightlife). Guest judges will include DJ Jimmy Taco (Hip Hop DJ and Flip the Bird Entertainment), G Spot (Electro DJ, OO Spot Productions & Love Festival) and Chris “Mr. Brown” Kahunahana (Owner of Next Door Honolulu). DEKOsound will be playing the opening sounds. DJ Evil One & D-JR will be headlining with a special closing set.

Earning the title of Red Bull Thre3style World Champion is no easy task. DJs will have to prove their skills in a series of qualifying battles before they reach the international stage. The Red Bull Thre3style battle in Honolulu serves as a pre-qualifying event where the winner will earn a chance to rock the dance floor at a regional qualifier hosted in Los Angeles on March 15. The winner of the Los Angeles regional qualifier will then compete against the top DJs in the U.S. at the Red Bull Thre3style National Finals, which will be hosted this summer in Orlando, FL. After solidifying his/her reputation as the most party rockin’ DJ in the U.S., the National Champion will battle against DJs from all over the globe at the Red Bull Thre3style World Finals, which will be hosted in Chicago.
