The second installment of Livingroom Johnston’s Pink Elephant series is reminding me to manifest the positive things in life. Mahalo, Livingroom.
Meant to post this video of our Anti-Canvas event two months ago, but then I just went on living life. Then I remembered.

This Friday 12/11 at Manifest Cafe (32 North Hotel Street, between Nu’uanu and Smith) is Deck The Halls skateboard deck art show. The sale of the decks benefit local skater Kenny Brimer in his fight against leukemia and mounting medical bills. Kavet The Catalyst put the whole show together and I wanted to give him some shine for all his hard work towards a great cause. Here’s a quick Q&A with Kav.
Contrast: When did you get the idea to do this event?
Kavet: I thought of the concept a couple of years ago. Then a year or so ago, I hit my head when I was warming up at Manana skatepark on a simple 50-50 grind. I remember seeing tie dye colors and blanking out for a bit. I started to think if I didn’t have medical insurance and I had gotten hurt what would I do? I always wanted to do a skateboard deck show so I put the two together and created a skate deck art show, initally to benefit skateboarder head trauma.
So, originally the event wasn’t intended to benefit Kenny?
In July, I started the planning of Deck the Halls and all the money raised was set to go to Skateboard Head Trauma. A few months later I heard about Kenny, so I instantly switched gears to raise money for his fight. In my first conversation with Kenny about me changing the cause to help him, he let me know that the way he discovered he had Leukemia was because he hit his head skateboarding! It was meant to be!
You have a crazy list of talented artists, how much of a headache was it coordinating with these artists, while also supplying the medium (the decks)?
First, I like to thank all the artists that gave their talents to this show. Mahalo. Working with anybody with artistic talent can be a headache, especially when there is a deadline. Mailing a skateboard deck is a pain, the decks cost $17 each and hoping that the artist is nice enough to pay for the shipping back.
Are ALL proceeds going to Kenny?
Yes, 100% of the loot is going towards Kenny! I want people to remember you are buying a one of a kind piece of artwork. So please don’t expect it to be $60 like the mass produced corporate decks you can get at any skateshop around the world.
How is Kenny doing?
The bone marrow registry found a match for him. Not only one, they found 300 matches. He hopes to be in California in about 2 months and be on the road to recovery.
How will the decks be shown? How can we pay for them on-site?
The decks will be displayed throughout Manifest Cafe. Set price. Cash only. You buy the deck you can take it that night. The decks will be displayed this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Monday we will take them down and the decks that aren’t sold will be put on-line to be sold. MAHALO.
