Rell Sunn Aloha Jam 09
December 1st, 2009
This November 29, at Waimea Valley Park a night to rock the North Shore took place with the 2009 Rell Sunn Aloha Jam. On the stage who performed were: Henry Kapono, Jake Shimabukuro, Paula Fuga, Cyril Pahanui, Kaukahi and Surfer Rob Machado.
Former Hawaii Lifeguard and one of the first woman Pro-surfers, Rell Sunn is symbolized as the Queen of Makaha and the Heart of The Sea. Her children’s Menehune Surf Contest, now in its 34 year, was the starting point for many of Hawaii’s top surfers. Rell was an achieved water woman, advocate for children’s education and seniors, sports caster for ABC’s Wild World of Sports, and professional entertainer as Hula Dancer and DJ.
Traveling the world as a pro-surfer, her grace, talent and spirit of Hawaii endeared her too many. Sadly, our ambassador of Aloha passed away from breast cancer at the young age of 47. Her legacy lives on thru the Annual Menehune Surf Contest in Makaha and through the planning of a Rell Sunn Memorial Bronze to be erected in Hawaii.
