Went for a tour of Kaka'ako yesterday afternoon before the Pow Wow Hawai'i Panel Discussion at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. This was my favorite mural so far.
This is my homie from kindergarten, Kai Kaulukukui. He moved from Hilo when we were still groms to Honolulu. We started hanging out again on O'ahu after highschoo when I lived in Kailua. At that time, I knew Kai as an unreal skateboarder. I moved to San Diego, Calif. a couple of years later and we lost touch again. Fast forward to 2011, Kai hit me up on Facebook and told me about a mural he was painting with several other Native Hawaiian artists at the Convention Center. I was tripping out because I was genuinely interested in checking out the mural at the Convention Center before the FB connection, and I was even more stoked on the project knowing one of my Haili Christian school homies was involved. I was so psyched to see he was apart of Pow Wow Hawai'i this year so I had to take a picture of him smashing this wall in Kaka'ako. Btw, how epic is Kai's moustache?
Shout out to our boys: ER Crew, chee-hu!
While most of the Pow Wow Hawai'i 'ohana were preparing for the panel discussion at UH, Kamea Hadar and Ogi stayed back at Loft in Space to paint in peace. It was really cool to have a quiet beer with them at the end of a long day.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one rolling on "Hawaiian Time." Pow Wow Founder Jasper Wong about to enter the UH Art Auditorium.
Distinguished panelists from left to right: Frank Liew, Ken Harman, Mr. Suitman, Jeff Hamada and Eugene Kan. I hope the UH students in attendance knew how lucky they were to hear these people speak about art, media and community. I would've killed for something like this when I was a journalism major at UH.
