July 23,2010 Duarte, California- Oahu lost a skateboarding brother. Kenneth Lawrence Brimer grew up in Oahu, Hawaii and has touched the lives of the localized Skateboard community.
Story below was written by one of Kenny’s closest friends Lawrence Warnken.
Last Summer local skateboarder Kenneth Brimer was out with a few friends street skating at Paki Park just off of Kapahulu Ave. in Honolulu when he unexpectedly took a fall and struck his head on the sidewalk. He wasn’t attempting to do anything death-defying or incredibly difficult, but the suddenness and harsh impact of his fall rendered him temporarily unconscious. Luckily he was near the fire station and paramedics quickly administered aid and took him to the hospital. Soon after the fall, numerous tests were run on him and it was then that Kenny was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphotic Leukemia. Soon afterwards it was decided that he would need a bone marrow transplant to help with his treatment, and one was located relatively easy, something that is not the norm in cases like this. Kenny went to California to receive the bone marrow transplant and await his recovery. However, complications arose and as a result of the operation he was diagnosed with Graft vs Host Disease. Kenny fought hard every step of the way but passed away on July 23, 2010.
There will be a fundraiser on Kenny’s behalf to help his girlfriend Lillie Brown get back on her feet. Lillie was at Kenny’s side the whole time while going through treatments, therapy and the Bone Marrow Transplant. Lillie has really faced challenges as she was not only facing a loss of her partner but the risk of also losing her job. Lillie was let go from her current job due to her not being able to attend work while being of aid to her beloved Kenny. Lillie was away for a total of 7 Months and has finally returned home with Kenny’s ashes. Lillie also wants to make a non-traditional Memorial in honor of Kenny’s personality and this benefit will also help her with this.
We are asking the media channels to help us show some Aloha Spirit and help us to contact all of our local skateboarding community as well as anyone who is going to be out on a Friday night. There will be good music and a great vibe. Please join us for a night of fun and remembrance of a great person by the name of Kenneth Brimer and as we are still in mourning we feel happy that Kenny can once again step on his beloved toy the Skateboard.
