Band of Horses & Matt Costa

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

Amazing show last Sunday put on by Band of Horses & Matt Costa. For me it was combination of the Bands, seats we had, the company i was with, the beers & vicodin i consumed that made it the best night i had in a while.  Oh yeah!

Happy Friday…

Flush Act

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

While making a quick pit stop at KCC’s KOPIKO building before my class last night, I couldn’t help but notice this sign strategically placed above all the toilets in each stall. It got me thinking… whomever placed these clever signs may be onto something here… perhaps we can implement these signs in ALL public restrooms! There have been one too many times where I’ve seen things in public restrooms… things you don’t want to see, but have during your search through many ‘opening doors’ to find that seemingly perfect little stall. It’s a nasty sight, and I can’t even fathom why anyone in their right mind would leave a public restroom stall in such disarray and unrecognizable destruction. Ladies, you know what I’m talking about, and if any of you reading this is guilty of this crime, shame on you! I propose that a bill be introduced next legislative session… a bill which would require the mandatory placement of these signs above every single toilet in all public restroom stalls! Together, we can stop the madness! Who’s with me?

Requests Record Store - Wailuku, Maui

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

One of the last record stores in the state and the lone record store on Maui is Requests in Wailuku. Recently I got to ask the shop manager, Brendan, a few questions about Requests, being a jaded music lover and what new music he’s digging. Also be sure to pick up Contrast Magazine at the shop!

Contrast: What’s your favorite part about being at Requests?
Brendan: Over the past 6 years I’ve been able to live and work around one of the things that I love the most. My favorite part of being at Requests is getting to answer the question ‘What do you do for a living?’ because I get to say ‘I manage a record store.’ How cool is that?!

C: Maui always seems to attract many a unique traveling musician, who has come through Requests?
B: Requests sees it’s fair share of traveling artists; both the best and the worst kinds. In the past year The Grouch has become a shop regular, since moving to Maui part-time. Another stand out is Z-Trip, who spent multiple days of vacation getting dropped off by his wife so he could dig records all day. That’s true love. He also threw us some cool swag, like a signed copy of his Uneasy Listening CD (Perhaps the best mix-tape of all time?).

C: Despite music being so freely exchanged and shared these days, do you still have people coming in and asking “what’s new?”

B: Hip hop duo Atmosphere had it right: true heads are the real music critics. As long as there is music being made there will be music snobs and will want to only find the gems. One of my favorite highs is having people come in after being lost in the radio waves, TV feed, electronic music trade and blogosphere of our days to find something new and tangible.
Those are the people I work for.
C: As Requests store manager, just how jaded are you towards new music?
B: A lot of people expect someone in my position to be extremely jaded by new releases, or just music in general. It’s actually quite the opposite. If anything, I’m overwhelmed by the amount of stuff there is to sort through. The key is to be a lot more picky about my selections. It’s very easy to go home with no pay check if you’re not careful. Therefore, I’ve had to get into a habit of really researching albums prior to their release to see if they’re worth my time. The goodies are out there. You just have to dig a bit deeper.

C: Four new artists you like?
B: It is extremely hard to just come up with four new artists I’ve been feeling. I’d have to base it off of the last 12 months because to really go with “new” artists is very hard.
-Brighton Port Authority- A Norman Cook aka Fat Boy Slim project nothing like what you’re used to hearing from him.
-NASA- The list of guest artists is enough to blow just about anyone’s mind.
-Invincible- This female MC is FAR too slept on by most.
-Buraka Som Sistema- Straight BANGIN’!

C: What’s in rotation at the shop today?
B: Aceyalone- The Lonely Ones, Grouch & Eligh- Say G&E, Mayer Hawthorne- A Strange Arrangement, Diplo vs Santigold- Top Rankin’ Mixtape and Imelda May- Love Tattoo.

Thanks B!! Maui No ka Oi!

R.I.P. Delta Thompson (Oct. 29, 1970-Aug. 23, 2009)

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Hawai‘i Island lost one of its finest sons yesterday morning, Delta Thompson, 38, passed away after an arduous battle with lung cancer. The Kona boy called Banyans his homebreak and was a pillar of the Big Island surf community. Delta inspired pride within Moku ‘O Keawe wave riders with F.B.I. (From the Big Island), a clothing brand that was quite often imitated, but never duplicated. Thompson was also in the underground B.I. band, Stone Like God, who was known for their dub-punk music and t-shirt designs that resembled the Steinlager beer bottles. He was also well-respected on the North Shore of O‘ahu and worked water patrol with many of Hawai‘i’s best ocean officials. Perhaps though, his greatest contribution to Big Island surfing was with the keiki. He helped Kona grommets like, Keala Naihe, travel to the neighbor islands and California for contests where he would coach the groms during heats.

According to pro surfer CJ Kanuha, it was one of Delta’s last wishes for his funeral service to be held on his birthday, Oct. 29, 2009. The celebration of Delta Thompson’s life will be held on Hawai‘i Island and Contrast will inform friends and well-wishers to the exact time and location soon. To send letters or cards :
DELTA’s Ohana C/O Easley, 73-4300 Haleamau St. Kailua-Kona, HI 96740. Pour out a Steiney or take a “rip” in memory of Delta. He embodied Aloha and was truly a Hawaiian heart born into a haole body. We know you’re in a better place now, but you will be missed by many, Delta Thompson.
