The Live Show

Friday, July 31st, 2009

I came across this video of a 2007 Dusty Brown performance and thought to myself that I would have really loved to be there (sorry about the sub-par audio). I’ve never been to a live show quite like it; the energy on stage had me yearning. I got their EP from iTunes a few years ago and loved/love the sound of Jessica Brown’s vocals over the drum and bass rhythm in “In My Place That’s All.” I just checked iTunes to see if there were any more releases that I could cop but unfortunately there was nothing…even the EP that I downloaded has been taken down—perhaps because there’s another artist using the same name. Shit. If you like their sound… check them out on myspace, or peep this other video.

He’ll also be cheering on his fellow Hawaiians: Roy Powers, Joel Centeio, Hank Gaskell and Tonino Benson will be competing in the Mens. Representing the Women will be Alessa Quizon and Nage Melamed. Team Hawaii is also graced with the power and style of Kekoa Uemura and Bonga Perkins!

Below is a photo of Nage Melamed theHawaii team contributing some of our own sand to the sand of all the competing nations. Is that a Fitted Kamehameha hat on Hank Gaskell’s head?

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Tonight at the Honolulu Academy of Art, ArtAfterDark.

“One part country, two parts rock ‘n’ roll! There’s nothing better than good friends, good food and good music on a Friday night honky tonk. So jump in your Boss Hogg Caddy and come on down, y’all!”

There’ll be a RockBand contest, live music, food from Town, all the galleries open and beer & wine.

Then head down to NextDoor after and get one half of Hollertronix (Diplo) on some dancehall/dubstep/favela shit. No LowBudget or Switch though.

Dalek Prints

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Picked up the color proofs for a DALEK print releasing next week. We printed them at Chromaco, using archival inks and a very premium stock of paper. They’ll come in two sizes: 12″ x 18″ and 18″ x 24″. The print is exclusive for his Hawai’i visit and won’t be available anywhere else besides The Contemporary Museum Gift Shop, In4mation (Ward Warehouse) and the event at SoHo August 7th. More info coming soon! Including a Hawai’i-specific background story about the print!

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

The upper level of this building on the corner of School St. and Houghtailing has been abandoned for as long as I can remember… hard to believe that it was where my mom and dad had their wedding reception back in the 60’s…
