Doom!

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

Love them or hate them, fixed gear bicycles are gathering an enthusiastic following (I didn’t know bikes could be so polarizing). Tonight, Honolulu’s peddlers will gather for a race at Diamond Head triangle park and then ride over to 39Hotel for a film showcase of “Council of Doom”. Council of Doom is a RVCA sponsored bicycle crew from Costa Mesa, OC, CA. The self-entitled film features them pushing the limits and having fun.

Grab at copy of Contrast Magazine at 39Hotel (we’ll have a box there) and $3 Red Stripes!

2009: The Grammy Remix Project by Mick Boogie

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Well… as we are gearing up to go to LA for the Grammys… (lots of cool parties I’m doing on Fri, Sat, and Sunday by the way…), Terry Urban and I thought it would be cool to honor the Grammys by doing a special remix project of our favorite Grammy nominees for 2009.
Ironically, looking back at our projects the past 12 months, it seems we were definitely barking up the right tree… since Coldplay, Jay-Z and Adele all were nominated for multiple Grammys.  We decided to go through the list of nominees and work with our favorite producers to come up with some really cool takes on your favorite nominated songs.
Ever wonder how Kanye would sound rapping on Kenna’s song?  What if The Jonas Brothers sang over some hiphop breakbeats?  What if Thom Yorke sang on Lupe’s “Superstar?”  What if Sara Bareilles bought a sampler and not a piano?  The list goes on… but the answers can be found here.
Mick Boogie & Terry Urban present…
2009: The Grammy Remix Project

1. Adele f/ 6th Sense: Chasing Grammys (6th Sense Remix)
2. Coldplay f/ Jay-Z: Take The Hill (Terry Urban/nVMe Remix)
3. MIA f/ Nas: Paper Planes (Terry Urban Remix)
4. Lil Wayne f/ Kanye West: Lollipop (Kickdrums Remix)
5. Adele: Cold Shoulder (Mick Boogie/Garbs Remix)
6. Radiohead f/ Lupe: Reckon A Superstar (Remot/Mick Boogie Remix)
7. Kenna f/ Kanye West & Lupe: Say Goodbye To Sky (Terry Urban Mix)
8. Jonas Brothers: Love Bug (Mick Boogie/Garbs Remix)
9. Kanye West f/ MIA: Swagger Like Paper (Mick Boogie Remix)
10. Coldplay f/ Lil Wayne: Viva La Milli (Terry Urban Remix)
11. Katy Perry: I Kissed A Girl (Excel Remix)
12. John Mayer f/ Jay-Z: Say (Terry Urban/Judah Remix)
13. Brazilian Girls: Last Call (Discopusher Remix)
14. Lupe Fiasco f/ Sara Bareilles: I Got A Love Song (Remot Remix)
15. Kanye West f/ Big Sean: Good Morning (Kickdrums Remix)

UFC 94: St. Pierre vs. Penn 2 Preview by JT

Friday, January 30th, 2009

its gonna look like that…

Preview by Joe Tincher.

UFC 94: St. Pierre vs. Penn 2

Hawaii’s favorite fighting son returns to action on Saturday, January
31st. Hilo’s BJ “the Prodigy” Penn (14-4-1), lightweight (155lbs)
champion, takes on Georges “RUSH” St. Pierre in a welterweight
(170lbs) championship match. Penn will be looking to avenge a split
decision loss to Rush two years ago. Both fighters are currently
ranked number one in their respective weight classes, and are both top
five pound for pound fighters in the latest Sherdog.com rankings.
This promises to be the huge, explosive rematch MMA fans have been
drooling over since their first fight. Says Penn, “if Jon Fitch
reminds him [GSP] of the terminator, then he’s going to think I’m God,
because I’m going to come harder than that.” The Prodigy looks to
combine his unreal grappling skills and takedown defense with boxing
skills that Freddie Roach calls, “the best in MMA.” GSP comes with an
all around fight game and the best wrestling skills in the UFC. The
Kyokushin karate practitioner recently earned his BJJ black belt from
Gracie Barra instructor Bruno Fernandes, and is superb whether the
fight is on the feet or on the ground. Joe Rogan, a UFC commentator
summed the fight up perfectly, saying, “two of the very best
tacticians in the game meeting at the peak of their careers.”

Stay Gold: Exhibit Opening

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Stay Gold is a “must see” art exhibition opening on January 30th at the Blue Hawai‘i Gallery. The show has been curated by Maurice Radke aka Moe Diggs, a Hawai‘i transplant who now makes his home in LA. The selection of featured artists have been “Down from day one” and includes: Angry Woebots, TesOne, Jerk+Skech, My Cryptonauts, The 14.400, Jon Radke and of course the organizer himself… Moe Diggs. I’ve been told that the opening celebration is a private engagement (invite only, 9pm-midnight) and the exhibit will be open to the public starting on the 31st during normal gallery hours.

Afghan Skateboard School

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

I just found out about this through my Skateboard Mag feed. A few skateboarders from Australia went over to Kabul and started a skateboard school with 3 skateboards. It’s the raddest most punk thing I’ve heard in a long time. A few months ago I read a great article in Thrasher about a venture capitalist investing in skateboard parks in Iraq. He said something along the lines of skateboarding and youth culture being the path to rebuilding the country and promoting independence. I couldn’t agree more. There is a link to the site below where you can get in touch with the Program Director and help contribute. Shit is genius.

Skateistan is Afghanistan’s first dedicated co-educational skateboarding school. The school will engage with the growing numbers of urbanised youth in Afghanistan through skateboarding and provide new opportunities in cross-cultural interaction and education. Students will be selected from a range of different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Student capacity will be developed in skateboarding, skateboarding instruction, project management, life skills and English. Our aim is to develop a program that empowers youth to take leadership on issues important to them and build networks that will counter current ethnic barriers.

Turns out Kabuki cho is the biggest red light district in Tokyo.   I cruised around looking for trouble,  but never seen no shit like this. This episode is pretty insane.  The next 3 are totally Fricken Mind Blowing! Check it at vicetv if you dare see whats really going on.
