Planting The Seeds Of Aloha
Thursday, July 31st, 2008This logo, literally came together in a couple of days thanks to Justin Higa, Hawaiian Island Creations Graphic Designer. I had the idea for awhile, but Justin quickly materialized my concepts onto the computer screen so we could get it on the National Scholastic of Surfing Association (NSSA) Hawai‘i t-shirts and banners for the 2008-09 season. Big ups, Justin! Quality was never sacrificed for quickness, and I’m extremely stoked on the outcome. How sick is the RUN DMC looking font?
This is the logo for the Koa Tree Foundation, the first Native Hawaiian non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the sport of surfing. Founded by up-and-coming pro surfer, Kekoa Cazimero, the foundation’s main goal is to provide deserving, Hawaiian amateur surfers funds to travel to California for NSSA National Championships next summer.
It’s a beautiful thing when wave riders give back to the Sport of Kings, instead of taking all they can get from surfing. I’ve seen pro surfers, Jason Shibata and Zen Yoshifuku give back to Hale‘iwa community through the Hale‘iwa International Open and Friends of Hale‘iwa Beach Park. And, while creating the Koa Tree Foundation with the Cazimero ‘Ohana, Bats and Zen were an inspiration to us. If we all start paying it forward like Jason, Zen and Koa, we can make “aloha” more prominent in surfing. After all, the greatest gift our kupuna left us is wave riding.
