Crooks & Castles Honolulu

Los Angeles based Crooks & Castles is jumping the pond over to Hawaii (can you blame them) and opening their Hawaii retail store at 641 Keeaumoku Street, hostess bar central, and right around the corner from Kicks Hawaii. Free Ace of Spades champagne to celebrate, since I can’t afford that I plan on aku birding. Crooks has been a staple here in Hawaii for the past couple years, so it only makes sense to open up shop here. Check out some of the limited edition Hawaii themed shirts available for the opening here on their blog. Doors officially open at 11am.

Bridezilla. Summer. Voodoo Donuts.

FoodKart Village. swanky Ace Hotel (with record player and records: Sonic Youth, Kanye West, Elliot Smith, Josh Martinez, Jackson Browne, Aretha Franklin, B-52’s, etc).

Powell’s Books. Mary’s Club. Rose Gardens.

FoodKart Burrito. Kenny & Zuke’s Pastrami. Clyde Common Chicken & Steak.

Food was amazing. Everything was cheap. So many microbrews, I nearly shat my pants (literally, my stomach is only used to bud light). A long history of loggers & prostitution. Most strip clubs per capita in the US. & 2nd most microbrews per capita. Got lost in the basement of Powell’s Books. Clean streets. Homeless heroin zombies with cute dogs. Easy public transit. Very friendly people. No sales tax. The homeless seem to like to all piss on the same eight buildings. Pepto-Bismol & Capers donut. Some of these microbrews got more ingredients than gourmet salads. Beautiful Mount Tabor wedding & sunset. Great summer weather. Ace Hotel. Kenny & Zukes Pastrami. Clyde Common. Thai/Chinese/Soul/Mexican food carts. Even Greg Oden’s 10story billboard looks injured. Avocados for 29cents. Single-filtered Stumptown coffee. Lots of flannel and not much deodorant. Not bad Portland, Oregon!

Saturday night we celebrated the release of Contrast Magazine’s 04 issue in downtown Honolulu… specifically at Thirtynine Hotel and Nextdoor. Free Vodka samples, disco balls, great music, girl crushing, family & childhood classmate reunions, good conversations, people watching, taking a blast to the past, 80’s & 90’s nostalgia, bringing back cassette tapes & remembering midnight make-out sessions… it was a lot of fun. Unfortunately, I didn’t take too many photos, but here’s a few that I did take. Where ever you were this weekend, hope you had a great one.

A week long Twitter survey revealed that my tweeps’ favorite Black Star song is “Respiration.” I think @badnewsrapdudes described this song the best– “probably one of the greatest hip-hop songs ever and I’m convinced that Jesus himself made that beat.” So here is a video to get you pumped for the Black Star show tonight at Aloha Tower.
