I spent the 4th of July in NYC. I woke up late and missed a friendly field trip to Coney Island so I took a cab to the corner of Broadway and Houston with my camera and a roll of film. I walked the crossing streets (on the shady sides because it was 100 degrees out) not really looking for anything in particular. I just wanted to get a feel for the city, wander and breath the air.
I just came back from a short stay in NY. My schedule was tight but I did have one night totally free where I got to hang out with a few of my friends that now call New York City home. Good times. One thing that really surprised me was the amount of people I met that talked to me about surfing. Surfing isn’t really a topic that I think about when I think of NYC.
While taking a break between beverages, my friend Rhandy walked me over from Max Fish to his place which happened to be just a couple of doors down. He showed me this video he put together just a few days before and it made me smile, and I started to understand…
“It aint Hawaii, Tahiti, South America or Indonesia but when you have to surf you gotta make it happen and be commited to it. Especially if you live the city, New York City that is.
It was gonna be 96˚ in the city and there was a little wind swell so I took a field trip out to Long Beach from the Lower East Side, Manhattan. F train to the C train to Penn Station to the LIRR train. When it’s dumb hot out it beats staying in the city or trying to surf the East River or Hudson anyday.” —Tizzy
I spent the last days of May on Maui. I didn’t pack my laptop or a digital camera…just a manual 35mm and a couple of rolls of film. It was a nice little escape from the pixels.
